An Investigation of Groundwater Quality In The Upper Ponnaiyar Watershed, Tamilnadu

Abstract


The study analyzes groundwater quality in the hard rock terrain of the upper Ponnaiyar watershed using statistical methods and chemical parameters. 27 water samples were collected from bore wells for pre monsoon and post monsoon periods and were tested for various parameters such as Electrical conductivity (EC), pH, Total dissolved solids (TDS), Total Hardness (TH), Sulphate (SO4), Chloride (Cl), Calcium (Ca), Iron (Fe), Fluoride and Manganese (Mn). The Water Quality Index (WQI) and Langlier Saturation Index (LSI) were used to assess the water quality. The study found poor groundwater quality in 15% of samples during pre-monsoon and 23% during post monsoon.
