Investigating Effects of Pressure on Discharge Velocities of Different Sizes Fluid Jet

Anupam Chowdhury

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the effect of pressure on the discharge velocities of different sizes water jet. To fulfil the above aim, the study selected two different diameters such as 6 mm and 4.5 mm water jet which discharges water from variable water head, H. The measured and calculated discharge velocities for each water jet were determined based on travel time theory and flow equation respectively. In addition, an expression explaining the relationship between water pressure head, H and velocity V, were developed. The study results showed that pressure head has a significant effect on the discharge velocity and increases linearly with the increasing trend of pressure head. The relationship between H and V is linear with the R2 value of trend line is 0.99. The calculated and measured velocity varies from 73% to 98% accuracy because air resistance were not accounted during experiment. The developed linear equation will provide easy estimation of velocities for different sizes fluid jet corresponding to required pressure head.
