Abstract

Innovative solutions to water supply and challenges in Nigeria can be achieved through effective and all encompassing Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) implementation strategies. This paper examined innovative solutions to water supply challenges through water sanitation and hygiene practices. Methodology used includes thorough investigation of WASH activities in Nigeria, expert opinions and literature surveys. Findings reveal that some communities in Nigeria are yet to fully utilize WASH services. In order to address this global challenge, efforts have been made through international assistance towards improving local communities by various international donors and working through governmental institutions. Adequate evaluation of WASH activities cannot be completed without thorough consideration of wastewater disposal methods, government policies, engineering facilities in water sector, appropriate data collection, funding, capacity building and community awareness programmes. It was concluded that Water Sanitation and Hygiene require immediate and adequate attention and its impacts and mitigation should be given strategic consideration of WASH in Nigeria at large for public health and hygienic environment. Innovative approach, effective management of water infrastructures and integrated water resource management are crucial for water projects.
