Rating of Water Quality of Rivers Water in Asari Toru L.G.A, Rivers State, Nigeria

C. Ukpaka, J.C. Ozota

Abstract

The aim of the assessment was to compute the water quality index (WQI) of Sama and Tema River at 20metres interval along horizontal direction of the river to determine the suitability of the water for purposes of public drinking, recreation and other usage. In this paper the functional parameters in evaluating quality of a water body were used in evaluating the water quality index (WQI) of the two river and these parameter are pH, chloride, sulfate, total hardness, TDS, TSS, conductivity, calcium, magnesium, aluminum, arsenic, selenium, lead, zinc, copper, manganese. BOD, COD and nitrate considering health implications of above parameters on human when injected into the body as a drinking water ranges from dementia, carcinogenic, astringent, toxicity, methemoglobinemia, gastro intestinal irritation taste and opalescence in water and so on. The determination of water quality index was determined using weighted arithmetic index approach and WQI value of 51 and 53 as an average value were obtained for Sama and Tema River, respectively indicating the river water is of poor water quality and should be treated before use in order to save the communities from water associated diseases.
