Abstract

Groundwater is an essential and vital component of any life support system. It is not only the basic need for human existence but also a vital input for all development activities. Our prime aim should be to preserve and to maintain the balanced biological communities and sustainable stream ecosystem health. In this study, the quality of groundwater in study area is analysed using IS standard methods. A detailed geo-chemical study of groundwater region is done, and the origin of the chemical composition of groundwater has been qualitatively evaluated, using observations over a period of two seasons pre-monsoon (June) and monsoon (November) in the year of 2016. A total of 25 groundwater samples were collected from bore wells of southern Tirupur district and analysed for various parameters for both pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons. A wide seasonal variation was showed for the majority of the samples; higher concentration was observed in the pre- monsoon season. The analysed physicochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, calcium hardness, total hardness, magnesium hardness, sulphate, chloride, ammonia, nitrate, iron and chromium are used to characterize the groundwater quality and its suitability for drinking purpose. Geographical information system has been used to map the sampling area and various geochemical parameters in that area.
