Abstract

In this paper we used an integrated suite of raster and vector geospatial datasets to delineate and characterize watersheds. The geospatial datasets used to delineate and characterize watersheds with the help of Arc Hydro tools of Arc GIS software. We have performed drainage analysis on a terrain model for Vindhiyanchal Region. With the availability of digital elevation models (DEM) and geographic information system (GIS) tools, watershed properties can be extracted by using automated procedures. The processing of DEM to delineate watersheds is referred to as terrain pre-processing. The Arc Hydro tools are used to derive several data sets that collectivity describe a drainage pattern of the catchments. The input to this tool is Raster data and Rater analysis is performed to generate output in flow direction, flow accumulation, stream definition, stream segmentation, and watershed delineation. With these data, a vector representation of catchments and drainage lines from selected points is being developed. Thus, this Arc Hydro tool helps in generating such attribute data that can be useful in the hydrologic modeling. This paper represents the use of Arc Hydro tools to process a DEM to delineate watershed, sub-watersheds, stream network and some other watershed characteristics that collectively describe the drainage patterns of a basin.
