DESIGN OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL SYSTEM AT ORLU JUNCTION, IHIALA, ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA

WALTER CHIBUIKE ANENE, P.T. Agudosi, E.I. Ogunjiofor

Abstract

The vast increase in population results in number of vehicular movement which contributes to volume of traffic at road intersections. This traffic jam is much during festive periods, causing delay which has negative impact to the economy. No one can easily predict the time of journey arrival due to gridlock at intersection on highways. This inefficient traffic movement is caused by absence of traffic control systems. Hence, this study had traffic count to determine the volume of traffic at peak hours and used the data obtained to analyze and design four-phase traffic control system at Orlu junction, Ihiala. The information collected from traffic count was converted to PCU using IRC SP 042 and IRC: 106-1990 equivalency factor. Thereafter, Webster’s method of traffic signal control was implored for the design and distribution of cycle time for all the phases. The results shows that the application of traffic signal control system in the study area will automatically control and minimize the intersection accident, eradicate the traffic jam and bottleneck especially at peak hours and also festive periods.
