Evaluating and Optimizing Intersection Performance in Indian Context-A Case Study

Rohan Vardhan, Rahul Vardhan Bhatnagar

Abstract

Traffic Jams in a network of intersections and roads is an omnipresent issue that is caused by several parameters. The Panchkula City of India based on sectoral planning has lots of intersections that are a mix of both signalized and unsignalized sets. These intersections at the edge of the major land use have several traffic transition issues causing congestion. Therefore, it is essential to resort to advanced software packages to scrutinize the best possible solution to the traffic congestion problem. This research is directed to evaluate and optimize Amartex Intersection in Panchkula City, India using Signalized and Unsignalized Intersection Design and Research Aid model and Delay V/C model. It assesses intersection performance based on several factors such as Degree of Saturation, Level of Service, Fuel Consumption, and Gaseous Emissions. The performance and capacity of channelized intersections were found higher than a signal-controlled intersection. The analysis indicated that there was a certain amount of emissions beyond permissible limits and a low level of service. It was concluded that a channelized intersection will reduce delays, congestion, emissions and increase the level of service till 2045.
