Simulation of delay variation at uncontrolled intersections for mixed traffic conditions

Abstract

Mixed traffic is composed of different vehicle types with varying geometric and acceleration characteristics. Capacity and delay are the two parameters mainly used to measure the effectiveness of uncontrolled intersections. The variation in the lengths and widths of a vehicle type also has an effect on the capacity and delay. Three intersections and three vehicle types are considered for the study. Also, different vehicle compositions scenarios (C1 to C11) were prepared with varying percentage of two-wheeler (2w), three-wheeler (3w) and four-wheeler (4w) from 0% to 100% with an increment of 10%. VISSIM simulation model was analyzed for different vehicle compositions. From the results, it is concluded that average delay increased for two-wheelers and three-wheelers as the composition changes from 0 to 100%, but the average delay decreased in case of four-wheelers. It is observed that, as the percentage of two-wheelers at the intersection increases, delay of an intersection also increases.
