Cost Impact of Structural Irregularities

Abstract

Since absolute regularity is an idealisation that seldom exists, building structures are typically irregular. Building irregularities are unavoidable because of the many practical and aesthetic benefits. The performance of buildings subjected to earthquake pressures has revealed that asymmetric and irregular constructions produce more severe damage than regular structures, and the collapse of these structures may be blamed for the majority of human fatalities. Vertical mass inconsistency is commonly due to functional aspect. This can be caused mostly by a change in configuration/plan or a sudden shift in loads. One of the most prevalent causes of a rapid transition in seismic weight of a structure is a change in structural configuration or plan form. When these structural changes exceed allowed limitations, they might obstruct the channel of force transfer. During an earthquake, the storey drift and stiffness between that level and the above storey might cause major structural damage or possibly collapse of the structure. The seismic response of the building structure is also affected by the position of the mass irregularity, and their link with cost is examined in this study using case studies. Irregular constructions must be constructed and analysed to resist the violent shaking of earthquakes. As a result, it is obvious that these inconsistencies would have a financial impact, which may be a key determining factor in the case of large projects. The research examines the effect of vertical mass irregularity on the amount and cost of reinforcing and concrete required. It also provides a link between the position of the mass uneven storey, the seismic weight differential, and the percentage cost spent.
