BASE ISOLATION: EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE

Aditya Sharma

Abstract

One of the most effective way of protecting structures against the severe earthquake is the base isolation system. In last few decades base isolation system have gain larger attention as a means in controlling structure failure against seismic hazards. In the base isolation system superstructure is separated from substructure due to which natural frequency of structure gets away from the dominant frequency range of seismic excitation. The effectiveness of an isolation system in reducing the forces acting on the structure depends partly on its lengthening the structure natural period. In present paper different base isolation techniques discussed.
