Exploring the Integration of Recycled Waste Materials in Concrete: A Comprehensive Overview

Anuja Narayanan, K. Sharmila, C. Sivasankari, M. Ramya

Abstract

The utilization of recycled materials from construction sites has experienced a notable increase in recent times, driven by the principle of efficient resource usage established by the International Council of Building in 1994. Recycled materials, including recycled concrete aggregate or brick aggregate sourced from construction and demolition waste, waste glass from municipal waste or recycled sources, and gypsum from gypsum boards, are being increasingly employed as substitutes for primary raw materials in cement and concrete production. On a global scale, an average of approximately one ton of concrete is manufactured per person annually. By incorporating demolition materials at construction sites, the consumption of raw materials is reduced, and land occupation is minimized. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the various applications of recycled materials in cement and concrete production, focusing on their impact on improving the properties and quality of concrete. The study aims to explore the effects of incorporating recycled materials, thereby contributing to a better understanding of how they enhance the performance and durability of concrete structures.
