Optimum Weight Design of a Singly Reinforced Rectangular Concrete Beam

Temple Nwofor, Sule S.

Abstract

In this paper, the results of the optimum weight design of a simply supported singly reinforced concrete rectangular beam under uniform loading with respect to bending moment, steel ratio and design variable constraints are discussed. The design constraints were derived based on BS 8110, Part 1, 1997 design rules. The values of the design variables that optimized the self-weight of the beam subject to the constraints considered were obtained using Fmincon Matlab command which uses sequential quadratic programming algorithm. It was found that the area of tension reinforcement increased with increase in grade of concrete, the effective depth of the beam section decreased with increase in the grade of concrete and the self-weight of reinforced concrete rectangular beam section decreased with increase in grade of concrete. It was also found that grade 40 concrete produced the optimum self-weight.
