Effect of varying water temperature on concrete properties

Temple Nwofor, K.K. OSUJI

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to determine the effects of mixing-water temperature on the compressive strength, workability and water absorption rate of concrete. Locally available materials were used. Compression tests results showed that the 7 days value of 19.52N/mm2 at 35°C was higher than the value of 9.96N/mm2 at 5°C. The 28th day results for compression test also showed similar trend. The workability of the concrete decreased as the temperature of the mixing-water increased, getting to a high of 30mm slump at 45°C. The result of water absorption test shows an increase in the absorption of moisture by the concrete. The highest percentage of water absorption was found to be 10.32% for concrete casted at 45°C.  The study has revealed that water temperature has a significant influence on the strength and workability. Also, it was observed that at an optimal temperature 35°C there is no significant increase in strength for 28th day test.
