Susceptibility Behaviour of Asphalt Concretes Under Varying Mix Temperature Conditions: Study on Stability and Flow

Enwuso Igwe, Daniel Azeruibe Nyebuchi

Abstract

Understanding the behaviour of flexible pavements synonymous with asphalt concretes is one that can be complex due to the make-up of the pavement (asphalt concrete) and the external factors that impedes its performance from production stage to service life. The present study had considered one of the most damaging factors to asphalt concrete – mix temperature; and its effect on some of the mix design properties of asphalt concrete that govern its performance during service life. The two mix design properties considered were flow and stability for three categories of traffic – light, medium and heavy categories respectively. The results from the present study showed that increase in mix temperature from 20 to 60°C resulted in increased flow of the asphalt concrete for all categories of traffic considered which initiates premature failure of pavement (asphalt concrete). Similarly, increase in mix temperature from 20 to 60°C resulted in decreased stability of the asphalt concrete for all categories of traffic considered which furthers premature failure of pavement (asphalt concrete).
