Risk Management in Construction Projects: Consultants’ Perspective

Fida’ Ahmad, Safa’ Seder, Ibrahim Mahamid

Abstract

Construction projects are among the most vulnerable projects to uncertainty and risks which affect project schedule and increase costs. The issue of risk in construction is a global one, and the Palestinian construction sector is no different. This study aims to identify risk factors in construction projects from consultants’ perspective in Palestine and to prepare risk map for them, then to suggest response for critical ones. A survey using a questionnaire was conducted using 41 risk factors from previous studies to define their frequency and severity levels. A total of 62 respondents who are working in construction projects in Palestine participated. This study identified 31 critical risk factors causing delay from the studied list. Top five critical factors were: shortage of qualified labors and experience, lack of labor productivity or efficiency, lack of equipment and equipment obsolescence, payment delays from owner, and payment delays from contractors. Responses were suggested for the top five critical factors. This study is significant for all parties involved in construction projects in Palestine. It is anticipated that the findings will help in evolution of the Palestinian construction industry by creating risk plans to avoid project failure.
