EFFECT OF SUPERVISION ON PRODUCTIVITY OF CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA

Abstract


Poor supervision in the workplace has been identified to be among the primary obstacles to achieving potential successes by an organization. Insufficient direction is thought not only to be the major causes of revise but also resulted in low productivity, poor safety, lesser working conditions, and little quality of construction industry end product. Also lack of effective supervision is seen as an inevitable feature of the construction process which has over the years increased the likelihood of project time and cost overruns, and ultimately leading to client dissatisfaction. The study was design to explore the effect of supervision on productivity of construction industry in Nigeria. The study employed the descriptive survey as the research design. Census sampling was used to gather and collate first hand information relevant to the study from respondents. A total of 35 completed questionnaires were retrieved from construction professionals in the construction site. The outcome of the study indicated that the factors influencing productivity on construction site are; motivation of labour, skill of labour, clarity of technical specification, site layout, construction method, payment delay, construction manager lack of leadership, lack of labour supervision and rain. The study showed that multiple supervisory roles exist in construction sites and team leader and self-managed team are dominant in construction site. The study also revealed impact of supervisory role on productivity of construction site as ; monitoring work unit progress, quick response on problem or challenges on site, motivating employees, formulation of realistic scheduling and ensuring effective work unit, planning and budgeting. At the end of the study, it was recommended that Management of construction sites needs to develop a training initiative and strategies to make team with shared leadership a priority so as to have influence on productivity of construction sites.
