Effect of Opening Shapes and Sizes on the Gravity Dam

P.K. Imliya, B.P. Mudgal

Abstract

Design of gravity dams is an important issue in dam engineering. Opening in the dam plays a vital role in the failure of the gravity dam. In the present work finite element analysis of the gravity dam for different opening shapes and sizes are studied. Koyna dam is considered for the analysis. Study of stress concentration and deformation generated in the dam is conducted in the present work. Two different opening shapes considered are square and rectangular. Dimensions of the opening are changed in such a way that cross-sectional are of the opening remains same for each change in dimension. Three sizes of opening are considered for each opening shape. The opening has been placed at the left-bottom corner of the dam. With increment in the size of opening stress generated in the dam is increasing. Circular opening shows less stress generation compared to square opening for small opening size. Deformation generated for small size of opening are same for both opening shape considered. Square opening shows less stress generation compare to circular opening for large opening size.
