Highly swelling soils are present in many parts of Tamil Nadu and they are highly problematic in utilizing for the structural purpose. Numerous studies were conducted using several materials for stabilizing them; through literature study it’s found that a single material such as lime or cement is not suitable for stabilizing the concerned soil owing to several bottlenecks. In this study we had made an elaborate attempt to utilize manufactured glass powder containing 95% quartz and silica fume in the presence of sodium silicate as binder. Promising results were obtained in the tests conducted including steady improvement in terms of unconfined compressive strength, CBR value, there is a slight variation noted concerned with the optimum moisture content with the increasing content of the additives. It is found that this material can naturally applied in any soil to stabilize and to have enhanced engineering characteristics. A 200% increase in UCS value is noted with the increasing content of the proposed admixtures and linear increase is noted in terms of Split tensile strength value.References
