Assessment and Prediction of Groundwater for Irrigational Suitability

C.F. Ikebude, C. Ukpaka

Abstract

Assessment of ground water suitability for irrigation purposes in Egita community has been investigated. The study gave sodium absorption ratio (SAR) values for different weeks of study. The values obtained ranges between 0.33 to 0.37 for both empirical model and finite element method respectively. The research demonstrates the suitability of using finite element method in predicting and monitoring sodium absorption ratio in groundwater water modelling and investigations. The correlation between the empirical and finite element method were established using quadratic regression model and coefficient of determination,  = 0.7999 signifying the suitability of finite element method in predicting SAR values in groundwater. The experimental estimated values of SAR through empirical model and finite element model indicates the suitability of the assessed water for irrigation application, the groundwater is of low sodium water (S1) can be used for irrigation on almost all soil and for all crops except those with high sensitivity to sodium, such as stone fruit trees and avocado and so on.
