Effect of encroaching vehicles on capacity of signalized intersections in mixed traffic conditions

RAMIREDDY SUSHMITHA, K.V.R. Ravishankar

Abstract

This paper estimates capacity of signalized intersections in heterogeneous traffic conditions considering the effect of encroaching vehicles. Accurate estimation of capacity of signalized intersections plays vital role in evaluating performance of whole road network. In the present paper two sets of saturation flow values are estimated separately by considering and not considering the effect of encroaching vehicles. Also, the capacity of the signalized intersections is found considering the effect of encroaching vehicles. For this purpose, five signalized intersections are selected from four different cities in India: Bachupally, Thondayad, Eranhipalam, Adalath and Gurunanakdwar intersections. The estimated saturation flow and capacity showed significance variation due to the presence of encroaching vehicles. The capacity estimated considering encroaching vehicles is higher than that estimated without considering encroaching vehicles.
