Addition of Musa-Pseudo Stem Liquid for Improved Performance in Sandcrete Mixtures Used for Civil Engineering Works

Daniel A. Nyebuchi

Abstract

The functioning of re-characterized sandcrete mortars is one that is of great concern both to structural and highway engineers; therefore, there has been an enthusiastic need to continuously improve its performance in order to serve the interest of stability and economy. The present research sought was concerned with modification of the property of sandcrete mortar in the fresh and hardened state. The procedure involved addition in varying amounts 5–25% of plantain liquid as a mineral admixture to partially replace water in sandcrete mortar by modifying the water – cement ratio such that workability in the fresh state and compressive strength in the hardened state can be enhanced. Results from the research revealed that addition of varying amounts of plantain liquid (musa-pseudo stem liquid) as aforesaid increased the compressive strength of sandcrete blocks cured at 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days by 32.5%, 27.4%, 10.3%, 7% and 12%, respectively. Similarly, addition of plantain liquid to sandcrete significantly improved the workability of fresh sandcrete mortar measured using slump by almost 73.5%. Therefore, plantain liquid can be used as mineral admixture for modification of sandcrete when enhanced performance is required.
