Seismic Vulnerability Assessment and Enhancement of Steel Moment Resisting Frame with Hybrid Damping System

Hanamant Rajaram MagarPatil

Abstract

Installation of energy dissipaters enhances the energy dissipation capacity of the structure. For an earthquake response, energy dissipation capacity and an innovative approach of design of these systems, this research work recommends use of Steel moment resisting frame (SMRF) enhanced with passive energy dissipaters. Non-linear time history analysis of a ten storied steel structure is carried out, with incremental dynamic loading of seven scaled earthquake ground motion time history records. Structural responses in the form of story displacement, story drift, roof drift, base shear and roof acceleration of SMRF are compared. Use of hybrid damper in the prescribed models has confirmed the expected phased behavior and energy dissipation capabilities.
