Experimental Study of Self –Healing in Reinforced Concrete Flexural Elements

Chandra Mouli Vemury, Marco Corradi, Bhavesh Patel

Abstract

Concrete structural elements undergo cracking under tensile stresses which can adversely affect the performance of these members. The increased availability of design solutions facilitating the self-healing of the cracked concrete elements can lead to the enhancement of the service life of concrete structures. This paper presents the findings of an experimental study where shape memory materials such as Constantan and Nitinol wires have been used in flexural concrete elements. Tests included cyclic flexural load testing of small concrete beams. It was found that the flexural member with Nitinol-wire reinforcement demonstrated a high level of energy dissipation and strain recovery upon unloading when compared with plain concrete beam and those with Steel and Constantan reinforcement.
