Seismic Performance of RC Building Using SMA Device

Vajreshwari Umachagi, Katta Venkataramana

Abstract

In the present study, the seismic performance of RC frames with superelastic shape memory alloy damper (SMAD) is investigated. Shape memory alloys (SMA) belong to a class of smart materials capable of regaining its original shape when subjected to heat at a certain temperature. Hence, SMA is used as energy dissipater and re-centering components. A numerical investigation is carried out with nonlinear time history analysis of a five-storey RC frame equipped with SMAD using commercially available FEM software. The results indicated that SMAD can effectively reduce the displacement of the structure during an earthquake. The obtained results indicate that the utilization of the proposed SMAD is an effective method for a reduction in peak roof displacement and inter-storey displacement.
