Improving Workability and Strength of Concrete using Plantain Liquid as Mineral Admixture

Daniel A. Nyebuchi, Temple C. Nwofor

Abstract

The performance of concrete is one that is of great concern both to structural and highway engineers; therefore, there has been a momentum to continuously improve its performance in order to serve the interest of stability and economy. The present research sought was concerned with modification of the property of concrete in the fresh and hardened state. The procedure involved addition in varying amounts 5–25% of plantain liquid as a mineral admixture to partially replace water in concrete by modifying the water – cement ratio such that workability in the fresh state and compressive strength in the hardened state can be enhanced. Results from the research revealed that addition of varying amounts of plantain liquid as aforesaid increased the compressive strength of concrete cured at 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days respectively by 32.5%, 27.4%, 10.3%, 7% and 12%, respectively. Similarly, addition of plantain liquid to concrete significantly improved the workability of fresh concrete measured using slump by almost 73.5%. Therefore, plantain liquid can be used as mineral admixture for modification of concrete when enhanced performance is required.
