Abstract

The finite element analysis has been carried out on six storey reinforced concrete frames using commercial finite element software ETABS. The performance of six storeys infilled frame failing due to improper design as well as inadequate reinforcements when seismic zone shifting from zone 3 to 5 was studied. The behavior of infilled frame considered in zone 5 was studied and compared with the results obtained from the analysis of frame considered in zone 3. It was observed that the members in the frame zone 5 were failed whereas the members in the frame zone 3 were safe. It was concluded that the base shear, lateral displacement, storey drift and bending moment of the frame in zone 5 was found to increase almost 50% compared to the infilled frame in zone 3. Therefore, three different retrofitting techniques such as shear wall, X bracing and jacketing were introduced in the frame in zone 5 and their response was studied and compared. The choice of the various retrofitting systems based on the economic analysis was also studied and compared. The total material cost of the various retrofitting techniques was found to be highest for shear wall followed by X steel bracing and jacketing. Thus, shear wall was found to be 46% and 91% costlier compared to X steel bracing and jacketing, respectively.
