Determination of the optimum magnetic exposure time for magnetic water concrete

Temple Nwofor, C.H. AZUBUIKE

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of magnetic water on the workability and compressive strength of concrete, and also to find the optimum time for exposing water to magnetic field, for which maximum compressive strength of concrete will be achieved. In this research, water was exposed to magnetic field of 336mT per magnet for a duration of 12, 18, 24, 36, and 96 hours, after which this magnetized water was used to make concrete. The results obtained were checked against control samples made with normal water. Based on this research, there was a significant increase in compressive strength when compared to normal/conventional concrete by 6.5% at 7days and 17% at 28 days from 12hours of magnetization duration till 24hours, hence the optimum exposure time was found to be 24hours because no significant increase in the strength of the concrete was observed after that time. Magnetic water concrete (MWC) also gave a higher slump value than Normal water concrete (NWC), hence MWC is more workable than NWC.

Keywords: compressive strength, magnetic water, optimum magnetic, strength of concrete, water concrete.
